Polish demo building

The Polish demo building is located in Gdynia. It constitutes one of the two full scale demo buildings aiming at validating the retrofitting approach on a large scale, from assessment of the starting conditions to the manufacturing and installation of the modular elements up to the monitoring of performance after retrofitting.

  • Objective
    Validation of the Retrofitting Planer developed in WP5.  Building will be retrofitted according to the strategy proposed by the Retrofitting Planer tooI. Then monitoring system will be working for another 8 months to measure post-installation performance. Quantitative results from the monitoring system (in different weather conditions) will be compared with the results of a Retrofitting Planer simulation. Even more important will be comparison of the energy performance before and after insulation. Data from the monitoring system will allow to do that, therefore can be used for validation of the novel technology used in the EASEE project
  • Description

    Building under protection of Cultural Heritage Conservator (CHC), constructed in 1950. External walls are constructed from the full brick with thickness 42 cm; three floors +attic; 7 apartments; building volume 1609 m2; heat source: gas/coal. Limitation of the weight of the insulation panel given by  CHC (max. 35 kg/m2)..

  • Retrofitting intervention
    The main function of the selected space is a meeting room. The external wall is divided into two parts following its existing geometry. The width of the wall to be insulated for WP3 (Cavity wall insulation) is 430 cm wide and 270 cm high (measured from finished floor, till the false ceiling); while for WP4 the width is slightly smaller, i.e. 420 cm; this will be divided into three parts, where each part corresponds to one of the proposed internal insulation solutions.
  • Activities description

    Undertaken activities:

    -Laser scanning of the outer envelope, then building CAD model of the building

    -IR scanning of the building to detect major thermal breaks

    -Setting up monitoring system to detect current thermal parameters of the building (inside and outside of the building). The monitoring has started on 20th of September 2013, and will last around 8 months in order to verify the energy performance during different climatic conditions.
